At two in the morning, Jake pulled the car up outside the Rymore family home. Hart was fast asleep in the passenger seat and Jake hardly had the heart to wake him up. Walking quietly round to the passenger side of the car, he opened the door and undid Hart’s seat belt. The freshman muttered in his sleep and fidgeted but didn’t wake. Carefully Jake lifted him from the seat and carried him to the front door. Thanks to being a light sleeper, the disturbance woke the younger boy from his slumber.
“Jake?” he mumbled, wrapping his arms round Jake’s neck. Jake sighed quietly – he had been trying not to wake him up – and put Hart down on his feet. Hart continued to cling to him for a moment, looking round with bleary eyes as if trying to figure out where he was. Tucking Hart’s hair behind his ears with both hands, Jake placed a soft kiss on the sleep-fuzzed boy’s forehead before grabbing his hand and locking their fingers together. With his free hand, Jake fished a key from his pocket and opened the front door of the Rymore’s New Jersey home. Hart stumbled in after him, muttering something barely audible about their suitcases.
“We’ll get them later,” Jake said softly, stifling a yawn.
As they climbed the stairs, Jake’s father came out of their bedroom and peered at the boys as they came onto the landing.
“Nice to see you, Jacob,” his father said, an edge of cynicism on his voice. Hart wondered if Jake got his sarcasm from his father. Mr Rymore looked at Hart, then down at his hand which was still clutching Jake’s. Hart blinked owlishly at Jake’s father, wondering if he was going to be angry.
“Night, Dad,” Jake muttered, tugging Hart in the direction of what Hart assumed was Jake’s room.
As they went inside, Jake let go of Hart’s hand and pulled off his hoodie then undid his belt. Hart started undressing too, dropping his jumper and t-shirt on the floor and wriggling out of his skirt. Jake grabbed Hart’s hand again and pulled him towards the bed, stumbling over as he kicked off his shoes and pulling Hart down with him as he collapsed onto the bed. They lay there for a moment, listening to each other breathing with their limbs all tangled up. Outside, a racoon tipped over a trash can. Yawning, Hart squirmed to get off the bra he was still wearing and dropped it down over the side of the bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head returned to its resting place on Jake’s shoulder. Smiling at how cute Hart looked, his hair all ruffled up and his pale skin milky white in the near total darkness, Jake stroked his cheek gently. Shifting into a more comfortable position, Jake attempted to wrap them both in his duvet, but they were lying at a funny angle and he couldn’t quite reach so he left it and instead hugged Hart close to his chest, feeling Hart’s breath warm on his neck.
Light streamed in the window, falling on Hart’s face. Blinking his eyes open, he squinted against the bright sunlight and turned his face away. Jake was snoring lightly, the breathy rattling disturbing the morning calm. Listening carefully, Hart thought he could hear people talking in the room next door, and remembered that Astoria was here with Caleb. Wow, this was going to be interesting. Hart had never really gotten used to his best friend being his boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend. It was all really complicated if you said it out loud. Fidgeting, Hart shivered and squirmed out of Jake’s sleep-softened grasp. Hart peered at their clothes which were littered across the bedroom door and wondered why he was only wearing a pair of tights. Downstairs he could hear the faint clatter of cutlery. Getting off the bed, Hart put on yesterday’s clothes and caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. Frowning, he took his jumper off again and looked in Jake’s wardrobe for a hoodie. He found a cute grey checker one and tried it on for size. It was baggy but not too engulfing. Hart decided to steal it. Walking back over to the bed, he knelt down on the floor and rested his chin on Jake’s shoulder. The older boy grunted and turned his face towards Hart, opening one eye just a crack so he could find his target as he lent into kiss him on the cheek.
“G’mornin’ baby,” he muttered sleepily, rubbing his face in an attempt to wake himself up.
“Hey,” Hart replied, leaning forward to kiss him back. Suddenly he heard a loud clanging sound, followed by the shout of a woman from the bottom of the stairs.
“Rise and shine everybody!” she shouted, the banging sound starting up again. Hart winced.
“Does your mother wake you up like that every morning?” he asked despairingly. Jake only groaned, as if suddenly he remembered his mother lived here too. Jake got up off the bed and stretched, yawning widely. After putting on a pair of jogging bottoms, he decided he couldn’t be bothered with any more clothes and grabbed Hart’s hand. Hart gazed up at Jake, his eyes telling Jake there was something he wanted to say.
“What’s up, babe?” Jake asked softly, pulling Hart into a close hug. Hart chewed his lip, scared to say what was on his mind. After Marco’s comments on the chat room ... well Hart was even more ashamed to mention it to Jake. This ... his thing.
“I-,” Hart started to say it, but changed his mind, “love you.” Jake frowned and stroked his hair gently. To be honest, Jake wasn’t convinced, and he sort of guessed at what Hart was trying to say.
“I don’t want to say...” Hart muttered, his cheeks flushing in frustration. Jake sighed and led Hart back towards the bed, sitting down and pulling Hart into his lap.
“Why not?” Jake asked, playing with Hart’s hair. Hart shook his head and kneaded his hands together.
“Marco- what- ... well ... I ah...” Hart struggled with his thoughts, getting more flustered.
“If this is about what Marco said to you on Friday...” Jake started, but then wondered where to take the thought next and found he was lost for words.
“No- I mean ... you- Well sorta...” Hart sighed, gathering himself, “Your parents...they don’t need to know...that ... I-.”
“You’re a girl,” Jake grinned, leaning forward so their foreheads touched. Hart nodded dumbly, a faint smile tugging the corners of his mouth.
